BotCon 08 thoughts

Whilst I was unable to attend this years BotCon 2008 due to lack of available funds, I had to experience the orgy of plastic robotic toy gayness rather vicariously as per usual. Thanks to this wonderful thing we have in the internets, we have all been treated to some close looks at some upcoming Hasbro releases. Here are some that I found notable. Keep in mind that Seibertron.com has some rather extensive galleries of all this stuff.

Universe 2.0 Silverbolt is looking good.

Why do they even bother with these Legends figures? Craptastic as usual.

So Soundwave is a Deluxe. Voyager would’ve been better, but he’s still balls awesome.

I wish I could read the card for the expected release date. Probably he’ll be out by the fall.

Besides, I’m pre-ordering these Animated guys as they come out anyways. I’m totally over wasting gas driving all over Hell’s half-acre for toys. I’m too old for that, I think. Come to think of it, I’m a grown man buying toys for myself. Who am I kidding?

Universe Sideswipe is the dog’s bollocks!!

That is all for now. the week is young. I’m sure I’ll find even more to share and bask vicariously to a con I sadly could not attend. Hopefully it’s in Florida next year.

“Live from Mars…”

After reading this story I’m hoping that they rename Wrigley Field to Mars Park. And I don’t like the Cubs one bit, but I LOVE sweet irony.

Doomed comic reviews

Well, I let a week get past me without taking the time to review what I dug last week, so I’m combining both last week and this week’s haul. Right, so down to the business!

Iron Man #27

Holy…..frakin’…..hell…..was this a good one. It’s hard to believe that not that long ago I was really wondering just what had happened to the title that I used to anxiously await every month. This issue did its part in making me forget about World War Hulk/Initiative crossovers and made me love this title again, now more than ever. Knauf even made me like my least favorite Iron Man armor, the Silver Centurion, which makes a triumphant comeback in this issue, right before he beats the Mandarin to bloody pulp.

I hope that this issue is a preview of things to come, as I had really started to tire of the role of Stark as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. If the writing that was on display in this issue continues, I think I could finally get used to the idea, even if writers like Bendis continually write Tony Stark as a complete and utter wank. We’ll see, but this issue was very enjoyable to me.

Thor #8

Odin! Donald Blake! Jane Foster! Surtur! Thor! Thor kicking ass! I love this book. This panel says it all:

Djurkovic’s pencils were in full force and as much as I’ve loved Coipel’s art in this series so far, Djurkovic’s work has a beauty all its own. I’m hoping that Ribic or Maleev get a shot as this series sometime in the future. Next week will only get better, as the Fraction-penned Thor: Ages of Thunder hits the stores. Taken in total, next week truly shapes up to be a great week, with a new Immortal Iron Fist on the way and Free Comic Book Day shortly thereafter. I feel rather lame in saying this, but I’m honestly excited and really, what’s a dork to do? There’s nothing else going for me at the moment.

Northlanders #5

This issue presents some further back story to Sven’s past. A welcome departure from the climax that is undoubtedly building, as Sven hopes to regain the fortune that is rightfully his. The dialogue for me in this book with it’s modern vernacular sometimes bothers me, but I find that as the book goes on, I start to just accept it and move along. I’m such as sucker for all things Viking and I guess I’m just happy to see a title that has a story set in that time period. Onward to Valhalla!!!

So ends my comic reviews for this week. I love comics again.

I’m really hopelessly doomed.

Must read material

I know I’m a bit late to the party on this one, but this weekend I’m picking up some Frank Miller badness.

I simply must. I’ve been a huge fan of the All-Star Superman for all its greatness. Now its time for the hilarity and insanity that is All-Star Batman and Robin. This book just solidifies the fact that the Frank Miller Robocop on Avatar was indeed the same writer we all know so well. This Batman book is a lot like how Andy Kaufman would write Batman. Miller can’t be serious with this. He’s either having a laugh or he is truly batshit crazy. Get it! BATSHIT crazy!!

The dialog alone is hilariously bad. (see above panel)

Oh…I must read this insanity for myself. In case you don’t know (and by now you probably do), check this out on I-mockery. Priceless. I for one can hardly wait for tomorrow when I hit my comic store.

I’m always in the mood for some laughs.

This ET will kill you

Flickr is the greatest. Where else can you find evil ET pics?

This photo is by Flickr member daedicurus. Very evil. And he has some great toy pics as well. I need to take more pictures of my collection.

I like!

Visions of decapitated air fresheners danced in my head

Good old Moss Man from the original Masters of the Universe figure line. Oh, how I remember that musky scent so well, and my parents amusement at both the name and the concept. I never played much He-Man as a kid, but this figure was nothing, if not memorable. When I found this guy on eBay, I’m half tempted, if the price is right, to pick him up, decapitate him, and use his pine fresh scent on my truck’s rearview mirror. I mean, my truck doesn’t exactly smell bad, despite its age of 12 years, but it does have “the old car smell.” That’s inevitable. What better way to combat that than with a Moss Man severed head air freshener!?

I think I found the art I’m looking for

With the unfortunate news that Catwoman is ending, it got me thinking about how much I’m not only going to miss a very enjoyable and underrated series, but the incredibly beautiful Adam Hughes covers. Sucks big time. However, I’ve wanted some new art to hang above my desk for quite some time, so it got me thinking, “How’s about some Adam Hughes art!?”

My cursory search led me to this, not very new, but oh-so-bad-ass Art Nouveau styled lithograph of Slave-Leia:

MUST…..HAVE!!! And I’ve been down on all things Star Wars for quite some time, and I love this to death!

This would be perfect. Gotta find one.

Helpful Kitchen Tip of the Day

I was reading my Essential Man-Thing trade this morning and came across just the kind of absurdity that I love in the old Man-Thing stories. Not to mention some helpful tips that I’m pretty sure most people have never considered before. Take this example from Adventure Into Fear #19:

Make note: When you eat some peanut butter, make sure that when you leave the room you close the jar. And tightly at that. Why, you may ask? Drawing bugs? Not hardly. The oh-so-helpful reason is that a warrior from another dimension just may pay you a rather unexpected visit!

Observe:

So a warrior forming himself out of peanut butter!

Bet you never thought of that. And unfortunately due to the thickness of the trade, the panel in the upper right of the last pic is fairly hard impossible to read. But you should be thankful–as the narrator quieried, “Is this a jar of peanut butter!? OR—is it a jar of MAN!!?”

I found that last line fairly disturbing. And so ends the helpful comic kitchen tip for today.
